Emmy Hughes HiRISE Image PSP_006855_1750 Emmy B Hughes Hello World

My name is Emmy Hughes! I'm a planetary geologist and Postdoctoral Research Scientist at CU Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Sciences (LASP). I graduated with my PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology in June, 2025. My primary research interests are Mars geology, aqueous geochemistry, and spectroscopy.

My research involves data from the Mars Curiosity Rover, of which I am a team member; orbital data from Mars (mainly, high resolution imagery and hyperspectral data); and analogue work in hypersaline systems on earth. My main tools are spectroscopic: I use visible-to-near-infrared spectroscopy, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy (among other techniques!) to characterize mineral assemblages. I am mainly interested in salty systems and how mineral assemblages, phases, hydration state and structure can be used to understand the conditions under which they formed.

I am currently working with Dr. Bethany Ehlmann at LASP on asteroids and Mars salts. At Georgia Tech, I was a member of the Wray and Rivera Hernández research groups.

Please check out more details on my research, my CV, my oureach work, and my hobbies! And if you want to get in touch, email me at emmy.hughes@lasp.colorado.edu, or find me (and my tweets about both science and indie rock) on Twitter @spacelover20. Feel free to also check out my Google Scholar page.
